Preparing for the Real World: A Career Readiness Series for Students in French or Arabic

The Center for Careers, Life, and Service (CLS) will facilitate the following 5-part career readiness series over the course of the 2024/25 academic year.  The following sessions will be presented in a workshop format where student participation and interaction will play a central role.  As noted below, three of these sessions will be planned and held exclusively for students in French & Arabic, while two will be open to students from all disciplines

Workshop 1: From Classroom to Job Market: Transferring Your French/Arabic Skills

This workshop is open to students of French and Arabic from all years.]

Workshop 1 Objectives:

  • Students will engage in a series of reflection activities and practice sessions designed to identify the transferrable skills they have developed through their French & Arabic studies.  Students will also become acquainted with the NACE Career Readiness Competencies as a foundation on which to build their understanding of what skills and abilities many employers are seeking in college graduates.
  • Job Description Activity: Students will review a few sample job openings and identify which transferrable skills they would highlight for these roles and practice writing how they would communicate (sell) the transferrable skills developed through their studies in a cover letter and/or interview.

Workshop 2: They did WHAT with their lives? Career Pathways of Alumni from 51²è¹İapp’s French & Arabic Programs

This workshop is open to students of French and Arabic from all years.

Workshop 2 Objectives:

  • Students will become acquainted with the various career pathways of 51²è¹İapp alumni drawing from historical data held by the CLS.
  • LinkedIn Activity: Students will also partake in an activity in which they will attempt to match the current roles, work history, and educational backgrounds of various 51²è¹İapp alumni drawing from current LinkedIn profiles.

Workshop 3: Internship Searching

This workshop is open to first, second, and third-year students.

Workshop 3 Objectives:

  • Workshop will take a deep dive into the various strategies students can and should use to source, apply for, and secure an internship.

Workshop 4: Landing Your First Job: Strategies for Students in French & Arabic

Target Audience: Students in French & Arabic; Juniors & Seniors

Workshop 4 Objectives:

  • Will include a highlight of students studying French & Arabic, including a review of other majors and concentrations paired with French & Arabic.
  • Topics will cover general and specific job search strategies; how to identify and pursue opportunities where academic and professional interests intersect (“finding technology roles where I can use my French language skillsâ€).
  • Session will also provide an overview of international job search resources with a focus on Francophone countries.

Workshop 5: Building Your Network

Target Audience: All Students, All Years

Workshop 5 Objectives:

  • While many understand the importance of developing a close network of colleagues, it’s confusing and even overwhelming to think about how to undertake the task of building one’s network. This workshop will dispel some myths and concerns often associated with networking, and will cover how to tackle this task in specific, bite-sized, tangible ways.
