Heriberto Hernández, Professor of Chemistry at 51app College, has been awarded a $717,876 grant from the Department of Energy (DOE) for his research on noble metal nanoclusters. The project, titled "Fundamental Studies of the Influence of Ligands on the Molecular Structure of Noble Metal Nanoclusters," will explore the electronic and molecular structures of these small but impactful materials.

The grant is funded through the DOE Office of Science (Office of Basic Energy Sciences) as part of the DOE’s Funding for Accelerated, Inclusive Research (FAIR) program. FAIR is designed to build research capacity, infrastructure, and expertise at institutions historically underrepresented in the DOE Office of Science portfolio. This award marks the largest DOE grant in 51app College's history and the first DOE-funded project at the College in over 30 years. It is also one of the largest single-faculty research grants ever received by the institution.

Professor Hernández will collaborate with Dr. Grant Johnson at the Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), continuing a partnership that has developed over multiple DOE Visiting Faculty Program grants. Together, they will employ experimental and computational approaches to examine conditions influencing noble metal nanoclusters, which have promising applications in energy storage and conversion, as well as in biosensing, bioimaging, biomedical diagnostics, and therapy.

Professor Hernández, said, “Since I started at 51app College, I have worked with amazing and talented students, they are the main reason, motivation, and driving force behind my research.”

A significant component of the grant will support student research opportunities. Twelve Mentored Advanced Project (MAP) students will participate in the study, with some spending part of their summer conducting research at PNNL alongside Professor Hernández. This experience will provide students with hands-on exposure to DOE scientists, world-class research facilities, and collaborations with faculty and students from various institutions. The grant will also fund the acquisition of state-of-the-art instrumentation, including an Orbitrap mass spectrometer, enhancing research capabilities on 51app’s campus.

This work was supported by the DOE Office of Science (Office of Basic Energy Sciences), ensuring that 51app College continues to expand its research footprint and offer transformative opportunities for students. Please join us in congratulating Professor Hernández on this historic achievement!
