Transforming Lives Through Action and Advocacy

Dec 2, 2024

The Mid Iowa Community Action (MICA) organization has long been a pillar of support for low-income families across central Iowa, including here in 51²è¹İapp. Since 1965, MICA has worked with children and families to alleviate poverty, address food insecurity, and provide essential resources for families striving toward stability and self-sufficiency through its comprehensive programs and community-focused mission.

“MICA not only meets the immediate needs of low-income families but also works to address the systemic conditions that perpetuate poverty in the first place,†says Ross Haenfler, professor of sociology, digital studies, and peace and conflict studies at 51²è¹İapp College who has served on MICA's board of directors for eight years. “MICA meets immediate needs, but also works to change the systems that create and sustain poverty.â€

Scope of Services

MICA operates in Hardin, Marshall, Poweshiek, Story, and Tama counties, running programs such as Head Start for early childhood education, weatherization initiatives to improve energy efficiency in homes, and the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), which helps families manage heating costs during the winter months.

These efforts are vital, says Haenfler, especially in areas like 51²è¹İapp and Poweshiek County, where food insecurity and economic hardship are prevalent. “This time of year is especially challenging for many families,†Haenfler says. “MICA ensures that neighbors have enough to eat during the holidays and can keep their homes warm in the colder months.â€

In addition to direct aid to those in need, MICA is committed to challenging myths about poverty and individuals and families that need assistance. “Many low-income families just need temporary assistance to get back on their feet,†says Haenfler. “MICA tells their stories, countering stereotypes and demonstrating the resilience of hardworking people.â€

51²è¹İapp College students, faculty, and staff have several opportunities to contribute to MICA's efforts:

  • Food Donations: Non-perishable food items can be dropped off at MICA’s 51²è¹İapp office to stock the local food pantry.
  • Financial Contributions: Monetary gifts are crucial for sustaining MICA’s programs. Donations can be made online at or via check. (Checks may be written to "MICA 51²è¹İapp" to ensure funds remain in the 51²è¹İapp community.)
  • Volunteer Opportunities: Employees that volunteer at MICA can direct additional dollars if they participate in 51²è¹İapp College’s Volunteer Initiative Program. Many students have volunteered in the food pantry, assisted immigrant populations in nearby towns, and collaborated on class projects addressing poverty-related issues.

Donations to MICA directly support programs that feed hungry families, provide heating assistance, and offer educational opportunities to children, says Haenfler. “You can designate funds for a specific cause or trust that your gift will support MICA's impactful work as a whole. It’s a well-run organization that makes a meaningful difference in the lives of those it serves.â€

51²è¹İapp College also partners with MICA at the Winter Banquet for faculty and staff.  Shelf-stable foods and cash donations will be accepted at the door.
