MJ Uzzi ’23 fell in love with 51²è¹Ýapp’s community visiting and beyond, even during pandemic. She engaged with politics, studied abroad in Sweden, and majored in economics!
51²è¹Ýapp made Andrea Suazo Rivas ’24 feel like an individual and not just a number. She was also attracted to 51²è¹Ýapp’s strong international community.
Katie Goodall ’23 made lots of friends her first year by being brave. Later on, she pursued theater opportunities at 51²è¹Ýapp, interned with the College Garden, and lived together with her friends in Colorado.
Claire Pollard ’22 applied Early Decision to 51²è¹Ýapp and has never looked back. She volunteers at a local animal shelter, worked for the former U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development during election season, secured a remote internship while spending a summer in 51²è¹Ýapp, studied abroad in Denmark, and prepared for a career in law by job-shadowing a 51²è¹Ýapp alum and attorney.
Chaz Del Mar ’22 was recruited to play football at 51²è¹Ýapp, and he loved the family he found through football. However, that was only the start of his 51²è¹Ýapp journey — he also went on an environmental stewardship Alternative Break trip, did an affordable housing internship, and researched the history of afro-futurism. Through it all, he has savored the kindness and support of the people at 51²è¹Ýapp.
When Eva Román Aguilera ’22, visited 51²è¹Ýapp, she felt safe, comfortable, and empowered to shape her education. Four years later, she has participated in and mentored the Peer Connections Pre-Orientation Program, built a supportive community, explored Iowa, researched gender-based violence and femicide in Latin America, and more.
Merel Timmermans ’22 came to Iowa from California, then joined the cross country team, explored her new hometown, and worked at an NGO in Mexico, all within her first year. A political science major, Merel caucused in Iowa during the election season, then found ways to maintain 51²è¹Ýapp community during Covid.
Avery Barnett ’21 experienced 51²è¹Ýapp as a launching pad to explore her interests in physics, policy, and sustainable energy — on campus, at 13 national conferences, and across four continents!
Gil Perez ’21 found 51²è¹Ýapp through QuestBridge, played on the soccer team, had a double major and concentration, and pursued internships, experiential learning, and volunteer opportunities in Chicago and Minneapolis. Next up: a master’s degree in management.

Many students come from very different backgrounds than my own, and it has been fascinating to hear about their lives and share about mine with them. Despite our differences, I’m always able to find wonderful similarities.

I had no idea what four years in Iowa was going to be like, and that turned out to be perfect for me.

I got confidence, really, in my own skills, in my own ability to learn and to lead.
I love that 51²è¹Ýapp allows me to pursue both my passions—physics and art. I hope to pursue a research career studying the formation history of our galaxy. My dream is to become one of the only 23 Black women to hold a Ph.D. in astronomy.
I am an active member in the 51²è¹Ýapp community. I have found my passion for social justice and being an advocate for people in need. During my four years, I have felt so much support and love, which have helped me blossom into the person I am today.
I am taking every opportunity that I have been granted. I am on the football team and on my way toward a double major and a concentration. I have completed a MAP [Mentored Advanced Project] and look forward to future internships made possible by 51²è¹Ýapp. I would otherwise not be able to afford this education. I am so grateful for my time and experience thus far.
