Students at 51²è¹Ýapp College have been putting their passion for animals into action through a collaboration with the Poweshiek Animal League Shelter (PALS), a local nonprofit dedicated to rescuing and rehoming animals. In partnership with PALS, 51²è¹Ýapp students have been socializing and helping dogs learn basic manners in order to give them a better chance of finding loving, forever homes.

In collaboration with the College’s Office of Civic Education and Innovation, many faculty members have implemented community-engaged aspects into their courses. Community-engaged learning (C-EL) classes were the vision of Wadzanai Motsi-Khatai ’12, who championed a student government initiative that ultimately led to the establishment of the Civic Education and Innovation (CEI) Office within the Center for Careers, Life, and Service (CLS).

Academic opportunities, career mentoring, and financial support from 51²è¹Ýapp helped Ellen Hengesbach ’24 turn an internship into a meaningful career.
Valery Lopez '24, Daniel Rosenbloom ’23, and Kendall Yim ’24—were awarded Fulbright U.S. Student Program grants to teach English abroad for the 2024–2025 academic year from the U.S. Department of State and the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.

Martinez has been named the recipient of the Celina Karp Biniaz Model of Resilience Award from 51²è¹Ýapp College. The award was established to honor Celina’s courageously hopeful life and legacy and bestows a cash prize.

The Udall Foundation awards scholarships and special honors to college sophomores and juniors for study in fields related to the environment and to Native Americans and Alaska Natives in fields related to health care and Tribal public policy.
Joyce Ceballos ’25 has joined the list of 51²è¹Ýappians accepted to the prestigious Public Policy and International Affairs Program (PPIA). In past years, 51²è¹Ýapp students Valery Lopez ’24, Loyal Terry ’23, Maximillian Hill ’20, and Angela Frimpong ’20 have also participated in the program.
