51²č¹Żapp College collects rainwater in cisterns across campus to reduce the use of water from the aquifer.
The Collegeās extensive investment in water conservation has led to landscaping changes, innovative construction, and more sustainable water use across campus. These efforts, in conjunction with the work of many other local groups and individuals, helped Poweshiek County decrease its annual consumption by 19 million gallons annually (comparing 2014 consumption to that in 2018).
Cistern / Rainwater Reuse
Cisterns are large containers for the storage of harvested rainwater collected from building surfaces for later use.
By catching rainwater that would otherwise swell the overburdened stormwater system and using it to irrigate and flush toilets, we can reduce our use of water from the aquifer and help mitigate downstream flooding.
