Biological Chemistry Learning Outcomes

Student majoring in biological chemistry should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate understanding of the molecular structures of both the monomeric biological building blocks and their corresponding assembled biopolymers and how the structures of these relate to their function.
  2. Demonstrate understanding of the chemical concepts of kinetics, thermodynamics, and equilibria as applied to biological systems.
  3. Demonstrate understanding of the reaction mechanisms of biological catalysts, including the use of organic and metal cofactors.
  4. Demonstrate understanding of the principles that govern the use and processing of biological molecules, including regulation and integration of these processes.
  5. Obtain experience with the use of models (Michaelis-Menten for kinetics, Symmetry and sequential models for allosterism).
