Pedagogical Goals

To familiarize students with a substantial and diverse body of texts in English or that inform English-language literary works
To enable student to analyze texts from a range of critical and theoretical perspectives
To train students in the techniques of academic research in English
To develop the skills that contribute to persuasive argumentation and stylistic elegance
To develop in students the skill required to contribute by creative expression to the traditions they study
To familiarize students with the theories and practices of inter- or multidisciplinary scholarship
To have each English major develop proficiency in reading literature in at least one language other than English
To develop in students the skills of revision and rigorous self-criticism
