French Program Mission and Learning Outcomes
The French program empowers students to communicate thoughtfully with individuals throughout the world, and to ²õ'é±è²¹²Ô´Ç³Ü¾±°ù in the ideas, histories, and cultural works that are woven together by the French language.
- Linguistic Proficiency: Students acquire linguistic proficiency and communicative competency (speaking and writing) to have meaningful interaction with French-speaking communities in different contexts. (Links to College-Wide Learning Outcome #3)
- Critical Thinking and Analytic Skills: Using analytical language and techniques, students analyze texts, images, films, and other forms of cultural expression. This includes the technique of the explication de texte. (Links to College-Wide Learning Outcome #1)
- Application and Argumentation: Students create persuasive arguments (both in writing and orally), using appropriate evidence, to address particular interpretive problems situated in specific historical and cultural contexts. (Links to College-Wide Learning Outcome #3)
- Knowledge of the cultures and histories of the French-speaking world: Students discern and evaluate key authors, genres, ideas, texts, and images from a variety of historical periods. (Links to College-Wide Learning Outcome #6)
- Knowledge of diverse identities and cultures: Students analyze different identities and cultures of diverse areas of the French-speaking world, as well as the interrelationships among them. (Links to College-Wide Learning Outcome #5 and #6)
- Personal Engagement: Students articulate ways that the French language and the French-speaking world have impacted their personal identity. (Links to College-Wide Learning Outcome #2 and #5)
Arabic Program Mission and Learning Outcomes
The Arabic Program empowers students to communicate thoughtfully with individuals throughout the world and explore the ideas, histories, and cultural works that are woven together by the Arabic language.
- Linguistic Proficiency: (Links to CWLO #3)
- Students acquire linguistic proficiency and linguistic competency (speaking and writing) equivalent to the ACTFL lower-intermediate level.
- Critical Thinking and Analytic Skills: (Links to CWLO #1)
- Students use analytical language and techniques to analyze texts, images, films, and other forms of cultural expression.
- Application and Argumentation: (Links to CWLO #3)
- Students employ argumentative reasoning in written work appropriate to their course level.
- Knowledge of the cultures and histories of the Arabic-speaking worlds: (Links to CWLO #6)
- Students are able to study in an Arabic-speaking country and to interact effectively with local populations while studying colloquial Arabic there.
- Knowledge of diverse identities and cultures: (Links to CWLO #5)
- Students compare key historical/cultural issues within and between Arabic-speaking countries.
- Students articulate multiple ways that people manifest their identity within the Arabic-speaking world.
